Engineer Yanine Mendoza, a researcher and lecturer at the Polytechnic Faculty of the National University of Asunción (UNA), Paraguay, has received the Paraguayan Women in Science Award in the Engineering and Technology category.

The award recognises her work leading the first nanosatellite project conceived in Alto Paraná, an important economic region that previously had no local initiatives in this field. The satellite is meant to help monitor crops, detect forest fires, measure floods and strengthen the country’s technological sovereignty.

She has worked with CanSat experimental satellites and NASA’s ARSET programme and has built partnerships with Brazilian institutions. Her goal for the next decade is a fully Paraguayan nanosatellite in orbit.
