The Democratic Republic of the Congo has launched a modern freight service on the Inkisi river, in Kongo Central province. The service starts with three high-capacity vessels and links farming areas to processing centres and markets.
The project brings together around 60 small and medium-sized businesses and is expected to create close to 500 direct and indirect jobs. Fifteen quays, warehouses and other facilities are also planned along the navigable corridor of about 105 kilometres.
According to the Congolese government, the new river link will help farmers and entrepreneurs move goods more regularly, boosting agriculture, logistics, maintenance and local trade.
