The famous Preikestolen trail is testing the use of data to welcome visitors in a more organised way. Researchers at SINTEF and Lysefjorden Utvikling have developed a model that anticipates peak periods by combining trail-counter data with information on weather, traffic and cruise ship calls.

The forecasts can help operators adjust staffing, run extra shuttle buses and let visitors know when it would be better to come on another day. With around 400,000 visitors a year, spreading the flow more evenly improves people’s experience and reduces pressure on the trail and the surrounding nature.
