Researchers at EPFL and CSEM have achieved a certified efficiency of 30.02% in a triple-junction solar cell combining perovskite and silicon. The result beats the previous record of 27.1% for this architecture and uses materials that are cheaper to produce than III-V semiconductors.
The team demonstrated the process on cells of several sizes, up to 54 cm², with a view to future larger-scale production. Durability still needs to be tested and the technology integrated into commercial products, but the advance points to a promising route towards more efficient solar cells.
