The ECPE Research Group of the University of Malta’s Faculty of Education presented the results of the project “Linguistic Diversity in Early and Primary Education in Malta: From Research to Practice” at a seminar in Mosta on 26 October.

The study responds to a fast-changing reality: according to national data, 31.1% of the population and 25.8% of state school students are non-Maltese. Schools increasingly need to support multilingual learners’ language acquisition, literacy and equitable participation.

The project, funded by the university’s Research Excellence Funds (2023–2025), included an analysis of policies and European teacher training programmes, a nationwide educator survey and practitioners’ narratives. The seminar brought researchers, teachers and education leaders together in group discussions.
