UNICEF Rwanda and Ishara Towers Rwanda launched a programme on 14 October to help children in underserved primary schools use digital tools and improve their reading and maths. It began at G.S. Mayange B school in Bugesera District.

The programme will support 15 primary schools, eight of them in Bugesera and others in Kigali, with laptops, Android smartphones for shared classroom use and English and maths content aligned with the national curriculum. Teachers will be trained to integrate these tools into lessons.

Over the next 18 months it is expected to directly benefit 6,000 children and 60 teachers. The initiative aims to reduce inequalities in digital access: in 2023/24, only 30 per cent of Rwandan households had internet at home, and far fewer in rural areas.
