Associate Professor Jenny Audring of Leiden University in the Netherlands has received an NWO L grant to reconstruct the mental network of words and grammar rules that speakers use unconsciously.

The project will digitally model this network, focusing on the grammar within words, known as morphology. Audring plans to build a Dutch ‘constructicon’ of word grammar, which she describes as the first of its kind in the world.

The work draws on databases from the Dutch Language Institute and Leiden’s morphology research tradition, and focuses on prefixes and suffixes such as be-, ver-, -baar and -je.
