In the first eight months of 2026, 18,766 new people joined the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO), an average of 77 a day, up from 68 a day in 2025. The total number of registered donors thus reached 532,996, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health on World Marrow Donor Day, 22 September.
In 2025, 486 Spanish donors went on to donate to patients in Spain and in 29 other countries, 14% more than the previous year. When the National Bone Marrow Plan got under way in 2012, there were only 35 actual donations. Today, 81% of these donations are made from peripheral blood, with no need for a bone marrow puncture.
The probability of finding a compatible donor in the registry has risen to 90%, compared with 82% in 2012, and the median search time has fallen to 26 days. The registry is also younger: 52% of those registered are under 40, and the average age of new donors in 2025 was 27, a profile associated with better outcomes after transplantation.
