The Polytechnic University of Guarda presented two patented technologies at Biomeet 2026, a national biotechnology meeting held on 23 and 24 September at Tagus Park in Oeiras. Both were developed by the BRIDGES research unit, in collaboration with the institution’s technology transfer office.
The first is Colorwound, a dressing for chronic wounds with a pH sensor built into an adhesive film. The dressing starts out red, turns pink when the wound is infected, signalling that it needs to be changed, and gradually turns yellow as healing progresses. Coordinator Sónia Miguel describes it as a dressing that protects, treats and monitors.
The second innovation is an oral gel made from microalgae biomass, either free or encapsulated in particles that protect it from stomach acid. The gel absorbs various drugs in the gastrointestinal tract and is intended to treat drug poisoning in people and animals.
For the rector, Joaquim Brigas, innovation and making the most of scientific research are strategic pillars that bring academia closer to business.
