A new battery architecture developed in Sweden could keep electric cars on the road for longer. The system identifies weakened cells and reorganises the internal connections to make better use of the rest.
In the models, the approach could extend battery life by more than 20% in certain high-voltage vehicles, a theoretical upper limit. In a representative case studied, battery replacement was deferred by around 14 months. The technology still needs to be validated in real vehicles, but it could reduce costs for drivers and lessen the need to manufacture and replace batteries so often.
