The Luxembourg Research Clinic (Fuerschungsklinik Lëtzebuerg), a national structure designed to strengthen clinical and translational research in the country, was inaugurated on 29 September. The project brings together the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), the University of Luxembourg and the hospitals CHL, CHEM, Hôpitaux Robert Schuman and Centre Hospitalier du Nord.
The aim is to make it simpler to carry out studies and clinical trials in Luxembourg and to give patients and healthy volunteers more opportunities to take part in research. A new portal, researchclinic.lu, brings together in one place information on the studies under way in the country.
The studies are organised into six priority areas: neurological diseases, oncology, immunity and infection, paediatrics and rare diseases, primary care and prevention, and mental health. The clinic is headed by Professor Christof von Kalle, who pointed out that some of today’s best treatments for serious diseases are only available through clinical trials.
The inauguration was opened by the Minister for Research and Higher Education, Stéphanie Obertin, during the Clinical Research Luxembourg conference at LuxExpo The Box. The minister stressed that the initiative helps patients access top-level care without having to leave the country.
