Imperial College London will create the Langlands Lab, a new laboratory in its Department of Mathematics, thanks to a £5 million grant from the company XTX Markets. The lab will be led by Professor Kevin Buzzard, a specialist in pure mathematics.

Its research focuses on the Langlands programme, which seeks deep connections between number theory and analysis. New results will be checked in Lean, software that confirms whether a mathematical proof is correct, and the lab will produce papers and free interactive tools to explain proofs.

The funding covers five PhD students and three postdoctoral researchers over four years, plus computing resources, visits and workshops. PhD students may use AI-assisted methods but must explain and defend their results without AI help. The lab starts operating in 2027, when the first PhD students enrol.
