Canada’s women’s rugby team beat England 24-21 in Toronto, ending the world number ones’ historic 41-match unbeaten run. It was England’s first defeat since the 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup final.
Canada trailed 14-5 at half-time and 21-12 after more than an hour, but fought back with tries from DaLeaka Menin and Shoshanah Seumanutafa, the winner coming in the 78th minute. “We really had to grind it out and find a way,” said captain Sophie de Goede, the world player of the year.
The match drew 18,621 spectators, 7,000 more than the previous record for a standalone women’s match in North America. The two sides had drawn 26-26 in England last month.
