Rome’s Cinecittà studios are presenting a new selection of stage costumes as part of the “Cinecittà si Mostra” exhibition, devoted to the history and development of Italian cinema. The pieces are on display until 15 February 2027, in a selection curated by Barbara Goretti with the support of the Italian association of set and costume designers.
Highlights include jewel-like dresses from The Devil Wears Prada 2, created by costume designer Molly Rogers with gold accessories from the Italian company Pikkio, and five pieces from Barbarella designed by Jacques Fonteray, whose leather armour was reportedly developed with help from special-effects master Carlo Rambaldi. Also on show is the tunic worn by Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Vespasian in Those About to Die.
The exhibition also marks the centenary of the birth of Danilo Donati, a two-time Oscar winner, with pieces from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s films, such as Decameron and The Canterbury Tales. There are also costumes worn by Alberto Sordi in Il marchese del Grillo and by Massimo Troisi in Il viaggio di Capitan Fracassa, the latter honouring Ettore Scola ten years after his death.
According to the organisers, the initiative offers a reflection on the role of materials in film costume, tracing more than half a century of experimentation.
