Makerere University in Uganda has welcomed the first cohort of the Africa Climate Collaborative Youth Skilling Program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation. The group is made up of 50 young people who were not in employment, education or training, from the districts of Lwengo, Rakai and Yumbe.
The training is residential and lasts 10 weeks at the university’s agricultural research institute in Kabanyolo, followed by a three-month industrial attachment. The focus is green entrepreneurship, starting with the poultry value chain.
At the end, trainees are assessed by Uganda’s vocational assessment board and receive government-recognised certificates. The programme aims to train 500 young people over eight years.
