The University of Bucharest’s Faculty of Biology hosted International Microorganism Day 2026, organised by the university’s Mycology Club with support from the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) and the university’s Research Institute (ICUB).

Under the theme ‘Microbes: Friends or Foes?’, speakers Ahmed M. Abdel-Azeem, Parisa Razaghi and Lia Mara Dițu discussed fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the forests’ so-called ‘Wood Wide Web’ and microbial life in Antarctica.

Pupils from several Bucharest secondary schools and university students took part in hands-on microbiology labs at the Botanical Garden.
