In England, free school meals have been extended to all children in families receiving Universal Credit, the country’s main welfare benefit. With the change, which began with the new school year in September, more than 3 million children are entitled to a free lunch.
Around 500,000 children are eligible for the first time. According to the government, families could save up to £1,200 a year through free meals, breakfast clubs and cheaper uniforms.
New standards for food served in schools have also been published and will take effect in September 2027. The Department for Education will provide training, resources and guidance to schools and is working with the Food Standards Agency on monitoring quality.
Eligible working parents could also save up to £8,000 a year on government-funded childcare, according to the same source.
