India finished the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan in fourth place with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. The competition ran from 19 September to 4 October.

One highlight was a “double” in several team sports: both the men’s and women’s teams won gold in cricket, kabaddi and field hockey. The women’s cricket team opened India’s gold tally by beating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final.

There were also standout individual wins. Neeru Dhanda became the first Indian woman to win Asian Games gold in trap shooting, and Lovlina Borgohain took boxing gold in the 75 kg category. The country also won titles in archery, wrestling, athletics and golf.

The total was below the record 106 medals won in Hangzhou in 2022, but it confirms India among Asia’s leading sporting nations, with women athletes playing an ever larger role.
