More than 161,000 people from 183 countries have applied to volunteer at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Brazil. The figure is a record and more than double the roughly 68,000 applications received for the 2023 edition in Australia and New Zealand.

The vast majority of applicants, 83%, are Brazilian. Among foreign applicants, the largest numbers came from Colombia, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria and the United States. Women account for 58% of the total.

Patrícia Hespanha, administrative director of the tournament’s organising team in Brazil, said it was inspiring to see so many people willing to give their time to help at an event that will leave a legacy for women’s football. São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília were the cities with the most applications.

Around six thousand volunteers will be selected to support operations in the eight host cities, across more than 20 areas, from media and technology to transport and ceremonies. Applicants who pass the initial screening will be called for interviews over the next two months.
