The Video Game History Foundation, which works to preserve the history of video games, has added to its digital archive the photo collection of journalist Colin Williamson, who lived in Japan from 1999 to the mid-2000s.

The hundreds of photos show game culture in the era of the Sega Dreamcast and the PlayStation 2 launch: Tokyo Game Show in 1999 and 2000, Space World 2000, Akihabara, Sega’s Joypolis arcade in Kyoto and a Pokémon exhibit in Osaka.

Williamson wrote for IGN, the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine and PC Gamer. The collection is freely accessible, and he has allowed researchers to reproduce the photos for educational purposes, with credit.

According to the foundation, the photos were taken nearly 30 years ago and help document a defining period of Japanese game culture.
