The Université libre de Bruxelles will install Belgium’s first complete OPM-MEG system. This portable magnetoencephalography uses 192 sensors placed close to the scalp, works without cryogenic cooling and records brain activity to the millisecond, without radiation.

Unlike traditional machines, it can measure brain activity while a person stands or moves, and can even be used to study the brain activity of a fetus. It will be used for research on brain development, language, cognition, epilepsy and neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, with particular attention to children.

The MEG4BXL project, led by Xavier De Tiège, costs about 3.27 million euros, funded by the European Union (ERDF) and the Brussels-Capital Region. The system will sit in a 4-by-3-metre magnetically shielded room and should be operational in September 2027.
