Three University of the West Indies (UWI) students, including Renita Bharatsingh of the St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago, spent eight weeks in the STORM Lab at the University of Leeds, England, through the CariSurg programme.

Founded by Saint Lucian researcher Dr Nikita Greenidge, the programme combines four weeks of online learning with eight weeks in person and brought together 55 scholars from eight Caribbean countries.

Projects included near-infrared imaging to help surgeons avoid nerves and magnetic robots for minimally invasive procedures. Students presented their work in Leeds and watched live robotic surgery in London. Applications for the 2027 cohort are expected to open soon.
