On 16 October NASA released a new Hubble Space Telescope image of NGC 1827, an edge-on intermediate spiral galaxy about 37 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Columba, the Dove.

The image shows rusty-brown dust lanes running along the galaxy and bright-blue points that are denser on its left side. Distant galaxies and foreground stars dot the black background.

It comes from a Hubble survey of 260 satellite galaxies around 22 Milky Way-like host galaxies within about 32 million light-years. Studying these low-mass galaxies helps test cosmological models on small scales.
