Morro da Urca, in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, is hosting the exhibition “A Aventura Pré-Histórica” (The Prehistoric Adventure) from 5 to 18 October, with pieces from the collection of the Museu de Ciências da Terra (Earth Sciences Museum). The show is the result of a partnership between the museum, which is linked to the Geological Survey of Brazil, and Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar.

The museum’s historic building is closed for works, and the institution has been relying on a touring programme to keep promoting science. Its collection, considered one of the richest in Latin America, includes fossils, rocks, minerals, meteorites and documents on geological heritage.

On Children’s Day, celebrated in Brazil on 12 October, youngsters will be able to search for fossil replicas hidden in a specially prepared dig site, paint them and take them home. There are also origami workshops, a dinosaur race and a laboratory where teeth, bones and footprints can be examined with magnifying glasses.

The manager of Parque Bondinho, Gustavo Maciel, stressed that the partnership shows how science and tourism can come together, allowing the museum’s collection to stay in contact with the public during the works.
