The Latvian National Museum of History and the University of Latvia’s interdisciplinary research incubator “The Beginnings of Latvia” organised the international conference “Humans and Communities I: Archaeology and Prehistory” at Riga Castle on 29 and 30 October.

The conference explored how human communities formed and changed, and how migration, language and culture shaped the Baltic region. It brought together 25 researchers from eight European countries across seven scientific sessions, with three keynote speakers from Germany, Hungary and Estonia.

The incubator is coordinated by the Livonian Institute of the Faculty of Humanities, headed by Valts Ernštreits. The conference was held in English and free to attend, and the first day ended with a discussion titled “The Future of the Past: New Questions, New Methods, New Communities”.
