Work to expand the Karenge water treatment plant, in Rwamagana District in eastern Rwanda, was 60.91% complete as of 30 August 2026, the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) reported. Minister of State Armand Zingiro visited the site on 23 September.

The plant will go from 12,000 to 48,000 cubic metres of treated water a day. The project includes a new 36,000-cubic-metre-a-day treatment unit, rehabilitation of the existing plant, a new intake on Lake Mugesera, pipelines, a pumping station and a 5,000-cubic-metre reservoir at Kimicanga.

The water will serve residents of Rwamagana, the capital Kigali and nearby areas, where demand is rising with population and urban growth. The works are being carried out by the public water utility WASAC Group and financed by Exim Bank Hungary.

The ministry did not give a completion date. During the visit, the Minister of State urged the teams to speed up the remaining work.
