A new train maintenance centre opened on 21 October in Montigny-lès-Metz, co-financed by France’s Grand Est region and Luxembourg, the Luxembourg government announced. Operated by SNCF Voyageurs, it covers about 12 hectares of former railway land.
The total forecast cost is €124 million, of which Luxembourg is paying €50 million. The centre is sized for 41 double-deck trains: the 25 already running in the region and 16 bought from Normandy, which are longer, offer 556 seats instead of 337 and are equipped to run in Luxembourg.
The building has a timber structure and is designed for a good energy balance. It replaces an older site that could no longer cope with the larger fleet and is expected to be fully operational for the 2027 timetable.
