India recorded a 21% fall in new tuberculosis cases between 2015 and 2024, according to World Health Organization data released by the Indian government. Over the same period, the global decline was 12%.

Treatment coverage reached 92% of patients, above the global average of 78%. Under the national campaign against the disease, more than 280 million people have been screened and over 2 million have received preventive treatment.

To reach communities, the country has launched teams of young volunteers and cadets who will promote early diagnosis, treatment adherence and the fight against stigma, starting in 55 districts across 11 states. In 2026, around 68,000 villages were recognised as TB-free.

India has also introduced a shorter, six-month treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis. The aim is to eliminate the disease before the global target of 2030, although there is still a long way to go.
