Mount Kenya University (MKU) in Kenya held the Placental Health Symposium 2026 on 5 and 6 November, focusing on infections in pregnancy and ways to improve outcomes for mothers and babies.

It was organised with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Germany’s Max Delbrück Center and the University of Cambridge, bringing together specialists from more than a dozen institutions in Africa, Europe and Australia.

Keynote speakers included physician-scientist Professor Jesse Gitaka, who directs the university’s centres for malaria elimination and infectious disease research, and whose work focuses on maternal and newborn health.
