A centre of excellence for gastrointestinal diseases at Thammasat University in Thailand and international experts adopted a consensus on 22 October on preventing, diagnosing, monitoring and managing precancerous stomach conditions in South-East Asia.

According to Professor Rathakorn Vilaichone, preventing stomach cancer is not only about eradicating Helicobacter pylori but also about detecting precancerous conditions, assessing risk and following patients up, as some remain at risk even after the bacteria are eliminated.

Until now, doctors in the region relied on guidelines from the United States, Europe and East Asia. The new recommendations are tailored to Thailand and South-East Asia, with the aim of lowering cancer risk and long-term mortality.
