Makerere University has told the story of Timothy Khabusi, who grew up in Manafwa District in eastern Uganda and walked more than nine kilometres a day to school. After missing a government scholarship, he studied Optometry at Makerere, became a Mastercard Foundation Scholar in 2017 and graduated in January 2022.

He worked in Arua and at eye clinics in Kampala before opening Khabusi Vision Care Centre in Kyanja in February 2026, offering subsidised eye care.

He reports having treated more than 10,000 patients since 2022 and employs five permanent staff. He is now studying for a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh.
