Makerere University’s Department of Mathematics in Uganda hosted a study group with industry under the Africa–Europe CoRE-MATH cluster and the Math4SDG programme, co-led by Professors John Mango Magero (Makerere) and Bengt Ove Turesson (Uppsala). Universities from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zambia, South Africa, Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway took part.

The teams developed mathematical models for concrete challenges: the cost to the state of a pension system transition, predicting hypertension risk from 100,000 records, the profitability of aquaculture investments and the optimisation of seating in a food court.

The aim of these study groups is to bring mathematics closer to the real problems of companies and public institutions in the region.
