Maryam Mustafa, Associate Professor of Computer Science, and Farah Nadeem, Assistant Professor at the School of Education of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan, have received the Google Society-Centered AI research award.

The project proposes that communities themselves evaluate artificial intelligence systems, using criteria they define. Women health workers, teachers, patients and adolescent girls will assess AI in low-resource settings.

The work runs on two apps: Awaaz-e-Sehat, a voice-based maternal health platform developed at LUMS, and a new speech-based app teaching literacy and numeracy in Urdu and Pashto to out-of-school girls.
