Rwanda will host Formula 1’s African Grand Prix, which is expected to join the championship calendar in the early 2030s, the Rwandan government announced on 13 October 2026. It will mark Formula 1’s return to Africa, where the last race was held in South Africa in 1993.

The race will take place at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera District, about 40 kilometres south of the capital, Kigali. According to the announcement, the layout will be designed to fit the landscape and make use of the area’s elevation changes.

The government says hosting the race could give Rwandan professionals and young people the chance to build skills in event management, engineering, technology and media, and boost tourism, hospitality, transport and local business.

The circuit has yet to be built, and the official announcement does not give the date of the first race or the details of the agreement.
