The DigitAP project, which created a single system to monitor biodiversity in Italy’s protected areas, was completed on 15 October 2026 at a session at the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) in Rome. The results were published by ISPRA, Italy’s public institute for environmental protection and research.

The work covered 24 national parks and 31 marine protected areas. The aim was to produce consistent, comparable data on land and marine habitats, wildlife, fish species and water quality, so that every area can be monitored in the same way.

According to ISPRA, millions of data points were collected. The institute, which led the technical and scientific coordination, designed and built the cloud infrastructure and a digital platform with its own website and interactive dashboards to make the information accessible. The project was promoted by MASE, with the bodies that manage the protected areas, and funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU.

ISPRA’s president, Maria Alessandra Gallone, stressed that knowing biodiversity is the first step to protecting it and passing it on to future generations. The announcement does not say what the next steps will be.
