According to data from Fietsberaad, the Flemish cycling knowledge centre, more electric bikes than conventional bicycles are now sold in Flanders, and 45% of Flemish households own at least one.
In 2015, e-bikes accounted for less than 1% of all journeys; last year, they already exceeded 7%. Over the same period, the bicycle’s overall share rose from 12% to 20%, an increase attributed entirely to the electric version, as journeys by conventional bicycle remained practically stable.
Public transport, such as trains, trams, buses and the metro, accounted for less than 5% of journeys in the most recent survey, below the 7% for e-bikes.
The profile of users has also changed. Ten years ago they were mainly people over 55, but today, among 35- to 44-year-olds, 54.7% of bike journeys are already made on an electric model. Of commutes to work, 22% are made by bicycle.
