The municipality of Torre-Pacheco, in the region of Murcia, has completed the renaturalisation of 1,410 metres of the Rambla Sur, over an area of around 51,650 square metres. The project, called “La Memoria del Agua. Rambla-Sur”, was carried out by the town council in partnership with the Technology Centre for Energy and the Environment of the Region of Murcia (CETENMA).
The works included removing the concrete bed, lowering the channel, improving drainage and planting native species. A floodable park was also created which absorbs floodwaters and at the same time serves as a new green space for residents, while also helping to improve the quality of the water that reaches the Mar Menor.
The investment exceeded €3.56 million, 78.25% of which was provided by the Biodiversity Foundation, linked to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. The works include a ten-year maintenance contract, and the government official responsible for ecosystem restoration, Laura Martín Murillo, encouraged other municipalities to apply for a second funding line, worth €9 million.
