By September, the three main non-governmental organisations dedicated to protecting sea turtles on the island of Boa Vista had recorded a total of 36,988 loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests. Over the same period, 33,075 hatchlings were released into the ocean, as the 2026 season draws to a close.
Bios Cabo Verde, which works on João Barrosa beach, counted 13,040 nests, moved 464 to a hatchery and recorded the birth of 17,165 hatchlings. The organisation also monitored 3,399 turtles and carried out 75 rescues, with the involvement of 84 people.
Cabo Verde Natura 2000 recorded 13,755 nests, released 9,548 hatchlings with the help of 12 volunteers and carried out the most rescues, 90 in total. Fundação Tartaruga, meanwhile, counted 10,193 nests and 6,362 hatchlings released, with a team of 47 staff and 58 turtles rescued.
With the season due to end in October, work is now focused on monitoring the last nests in the hatcheries and gathering the season’s final scientific data.
