The Serra dos Pireneus Mosaic, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, was officially recognised on 7 October by an ordinance from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change published in the Diário Oficial da União (Official Gazette). It brings together 20 private reserves located around the town of Pirenópolis.
The aim is to strengthen biodiversity protection and enable the various areas to plan environmental action together. Mosaics of protected areas are provided for in Brazil’s national system of conservation units as a way of managing territories with different conservation zones in an integrated manner.
The ordinance also creates an advisory council, with representatives of public authorities, educational institutions, civil society organisations and reserve managers. This body will coordinate the protection of the mountain range’s natural resources and its cultural and landscape values, with a focus on sustainable development, and may set up technical committees.
The council will be chaired by one of the reserve managers, chosen by the councillors themselves. Units not yet listed in the national register of conservation units have six months to complete registration.
