Since the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz began in February 2026, gas prices have soared. But according to an analysis by the specialist website Carbon Brief, wind and solar power have saved the UK £5.9 billion in gas imports.
This year, wind and solar have already produced a record 41% of the UK’s electricity, compared with 25% from gas. Wind and solar output rose by 14% on the previous year, while gas-fired electricity fell by almost 10%.
The savings are equivalent to more than a hundred shiploads of liquefied natural gas that did not need to be imported. While household gas bills have risen by around 33% since April, electricity bills have risen by just 4%.
