Germany has presented a roadmap to phase out coal, oil and gas and reach climate neutrality by 2045. The plan was presented by the environment minister, Carsten Schneider, at the United Nations in New York. Germany is the third country to do so, after France and the Netherlands.

Renewables already produce around 55% of the electricity consumed in the country, and the target is to reach at least 80% by 2030. Coal is due to end by 2038. In August 2026, around a third of new cars registered were fully electric, and in 2025 more heat pumps than gas boilers were sold for the first time.

According to the minister, dependence on fossil fuels is expensive and risky, and the transition is both a climate and an economic strategy.
