Researchers at ETH Zurich and OST have developed flexible refrigerant mixtures for industrial heat pumps. By tailoring the fluid to each company’s needs, the mixtures can increase the flexibility, efficiency and maximum temperature of the heat pumps.

The technology is aimed at industrial processes that need heat at temperatures of up to 200 °C. A pilot project is planned at a Lindt industrial site. If the performance is confirmed at scale, the solution could help decarbonise the heat used by industry.
