The CoVets association, in partnership with Ribeira Brava municipal council, ran the second neutering and deworming campaign for dogs and cats in this municipality on the island of São Nicolau. Around 400 animals were examined, of which nearly 200 were neutered.
Veterinarian Lara Baptista described the results as “very positive”. Each animal was assessed for its health and for parasites, and the data were recorded so they can be compared with the first campaign, held last year.
She highlighted strong community participation, especially in Fajã. Among the difficulties, she pointed to limited time, a small team, cat colonies and hard-to-reach areas, and suggested strengthening the team or extending the intervention period in future editions.
Lara Baptista also warned of cases of animal poisoning reported by residents in some localities, noting that poisons sometimes used against rats can kill other animals.
