The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in Tanzania has signed a partnership with small-scale miners in Nzega District, Tabora Region, near its local campus, to give them access to research, technical services and specialised training.

The aim is safer, more efficient and more environmentally responsible mineral extraction. Plans include modern laboratories to analyse samples, especially gold, and training that combines classroom teaching with hands-on equipment practice.

The School of Mines and Geosciences, led by Dean Prof. Elisante Mshiu, will also assess mineral-bearing areas. The university stressed that the agreement does not authorise mining: all legal approvals must be secured first.
