Burundi launched the 2026-2027 school year and the ‘Back to School 2026’ campaign at the Bisinde Vocational Training Centre in Buhumuza province. This year’s theme focuses on equitable, inclusive, technical and vocational education.

As part of the campaign, almost 80,000 children across the country will receive school kits containing exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers and materials to support learning maths. The distribution is funded by UNICEF and the Global Partnership for Education.

The aim is to support children from the most vulnerable families so that they can attend school from the very first day. One pupil said she had feared she would be unable to study because she had no supplies, while a classmate said the kit would help him achieve his dream of becoming a doctor.
