A CONICET team led by Marcela Michaut, of the Reproductive and Molecular Biology Laboratory at the Mendoza Institute of Histology and Embryology (CONICET-UNCUYO), is developing reproductive biotechnologies to conserve and improve the province’s goat and cattle populations.

The work includes assessing semen quality, freezing it for long-term storage, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and, later, in vitro embryo production. The aim is to build a germplasm bank that preserves the genetic material of valuable populations.

That way, genetic resources remain available even after losses caused by droughts or fires. The project stems from an agreement between CONICET and Mendoza’s Provincial Livestock Directorate and also includes training for farmers.
