Angola has carried out its first robotic kidney surgeries at the Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex in Luanda. The operations were performed by a team of Angolan doctors under the supervision of the Brazilian urologist and robotic surgeon Oséas Neves, who is on his third mission in the country.
The first patient, 52-year-old Pinto Kafumana, had a tumour in his right kidney and had sought treatment in Namibia, from where he had to return because of the high costs. According to the surgeon, the operation went well and the patient is recovering. The team expected to operate on up to 13 patients during the week.
According to the doctors, the robotic technique means less bleeding and pain and allows a quicker return to everyday activities.
This is the eighth robotic surgery campaign, a programme launched in August 2024 that has already carried out 145 procedures and trained 15 Angolan surgeons in general surgery, gynaecology and urology. The Ministry of Health places the initiative within a strategy to modernise care and strengthen national expertise.
