On 8 October, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries launched a ten-day training course for 25 fruit producers in the town of Porto Novo, on the island of Santo Antão. The course covers integrated pest and disease management and pruning techniques.
The participants come from places such as Ribeira das Patas, Casa de Meio, Lajedos, Planalto Leste, Ribeira Fria, Ribeira dos Bodes and Jorge Luís. According to the ministry’s local delegate, Nuno Delgado, the aim is to teach plant protection techniques and to tackle the main pests efficiently and sustainably.
Between late September and early October, another training course took place in Jorge Luís, in the interior of the municipality, focusing on organic farming, sustainable production and green technologies. It involved 30 local farmers.
Both courses were run by rural extension officers from the local delegation, and the second was supported by a farmer and biofertiliser producer from Alto Mira. The delegation considers building the skills of the municipality’s farmers a priority.
