Bacteria from Swiss alpine lakes have shown an unexpected ability to reduce the infectivity of certain viruses. EPFL researchers isolated 200 strains from samples taken from 24 lakes and identified several with antiviral activity.
The discovery still requires further study to understand the mechanisms and confirm applications outside the laboratory. Even so, it opens up interesting possibilities for protecting crops and improving water safety through solutions inspired by natural micro-organisms.
