A new conservation project aims to help the Saimaa ringed seal population reach 700 animals by 2032. The initiative combines research, monitoring and practical action to protect breeding sites and reduce threats.
Planned measures include expanding the network of artificial snowdrifts for nesting, better digital collection of seal observations and cooperation with volunteers from local communities. The population has been recovering over recent decades, and the new target seeks to consolidate that progress under changing environmental conditions.
